My daughter has a crush.
I once was the focus of your all your affection
But today your gaze has changed its direction.
We continue to share a strong, loving bond
But now you are searching for attention beyond.

On the day I first met you, it was love at first sight.
I wrapped you in blankets and watched through the night.
I drove home with caution to keep you from harm
And for so many months held you close in my arm.

When I got home from work I'd be hugged at the knees,
And we'd play on the floor and tickle and tease.
Then it was bath time and prayers by your bed,
And I would be yawning through stories we read.

Your first day of school was a difficult day,
You sat down at your desk and I couldn't stay.
But you came through just fine and had so much fun
You couldn't wait to get back and see everyone.

A young lady today that has grown like a weed,
You’re a beautiful child, who's my blessing, indeed.
You are kind and respectful, and I well up inside
With joy and love, and unbridled pride.

But we have turned a corner that I knew was approaching.
Now on our time there are others encroaching.
I am told it is natural and I shouldn't care
But this reality is almost too much to bear.

I want to stop time, even turn back the days,
To when I was the only boy that you praised.
But now there's another who is sharing the crown,
And I see that our time is whittling down.

I must let it be, I can't stand in the way,
I just hope you know what I am feeling today.
Please know that I love you and I'll adjust in a while,
But right now I hide my tears with a smile.
