The year is 2064, and the population has become sparse. Darren's story is unlike no other.
Darren lifted his head upwards and then downwards. He stared at the large needle about to be injected into his right shoulder; the liquid entering his skin slithered through to his muscle.
“Ouch!” he squealed as Holly pulled the needle out.
“This is compulsory Darren" began Holly as she pushed her silky chestnut locks out of her line of sight, “ready to go to the Surface.”
Darren glared at the other set of needles which were going to approach his arm any minute now. Holly reached for the second needle, and pressed furiously down into his skin. He bit his lip as the needle slid through, but he contained his scream. Holly put down the needle and reached for the next one in the line, she paused. Her head turned to face Darren as his hand ran across his bleeding speck. He sighed and looked back at Holly, but she turned her head back almost immediately.
“So, are you excited Darren?” said Holly nervously; she now looked at Darren with a sterile wipe in her left hand and another needle in the other.
“I suppose” replied Darren with hesitation, “it’ll all be over in a few hours then I have to go.” He was then interrupted by Holly as she injected again.
“I’m going as well you know. You won’t be alone.” The needle was placed onto the table and she reached the final one. She stabbed it into his arm and pulled out almost immediately, then she cleaned it with another sterile wipe and handed Darren a fraction of cotton wool. “There, done! Wasn’t that bad was it?” laughed Holly.
Darren slid off the seat and stood up; he could hear cheering, it grew louder and louder. All of a sudden a huge crowd appeared, and threw Darren up into the air, like a rag doll. He reached the floor and was dragged up by a group of new people.
"Happy birthday for tomorrow!" They all screamed as he held his ears down, but he began to grin. Holly looked flabbergasted and outraged, but she packed away her needles and walked out, as if she didn't exist. Darren didn't realise Holly had left, but he was so full of joy, like when he first entered the Sector.
The Sector was a tribe inhabited by children aged from when they're able to talk and remember memories, until they're sixteen. When they're sixteen they leave the tribe to enter the real world, known to most as the Surface. No one knows what's out there, but most either don't survive to tell the tale, or are not allowed back to tell the tale.
