A soldier honered on the field of battle but disgraced in the court of law
A soldier once a long time ago
His bars he's no longer allowed to show

He was sent to a far away land for his country to fight
Living through the horrors of war both day and night

His men, friends, and buddies died on his right and some on his left
But regardles he pressed forward, forcing his remorse back with a breath

With every mission assigned, he was known above others to complete every task
Never questioning orders, a good soldier never asks

Yet this unknown soldiers recognition came about with world wide attention
Because of an incident he was involved in, placed his career on suspension

His problem he said, while in VIetnam, he was ordered to wipeout a village and not to reason why
Remembering a soldiers first orders, not to reason why but to do or die

And then when the battle was all said and done
This brave Lieutenant never thought there was anything to lose, since the battle was won

He was brought up on charges and faced a military court martial for reasons to him that seemed obscure
With his patriotism in question, he testified, "Sir I was obeying orders", his innocense he was sure

But they found him guilty and placed him in jail
And for this, he felt duty and honor put him through hell

Many proud Americans felt this Lieutenant had been had
For them, to obvious a reason this Lieutenants supervisors made life for him unjustly bad

So now, some of us wonder, like General Custer will the Lieutenant ahve to die to recieve a Generals Star
To make up for the pain that was carved into his soul, a never healing scar

A soldier to some of us, this officer will always be
But for one Second Lieutenant Calley don't think your forgotten
For many of us remember and believe you were done rotten

Yes, I will stand up and say, "I'm proud your an American thru and thru
I just hope someday, people will think, I am Too!
