In less than 50 years, the family dwelling has been progressively restructured into a consumer warehouse and display center. It has grown obese like the owners, on a low fiber and nourishment, fast use by date, high fat, cholesterol, sugar and salt diet of increasingly refined age and gender market segmentation, that bloats the need for ever more rooms, display and functions; that keeps the adults in ever spiraling debt and work schedules; that explodes the family gathering space around the dinner table, into the rumpus room, the parental bunker, or wherever it drops; that leaves the children to the tender mercies of the electronic childminders, who deliver young, impressionable and voraciously browsing audiences to the imagineers, the propagandists, the brain washers; that keeps exponentially expanding the inventory of the imagined want beyond greed or reason; and at week’s end, leaves them wallowing amongst the detritus of their gadgets and discarded food wrappers; for the cleaner comes but once a week.
