A conversation between a boy and girl.
There were few living things here, before she came along.  It could have been a parking lot or an urban playground.  Instead I built a school.  Policy experts and critics from around the nation lept on my proposal. “I’m going to progress education,” I proclaimed.  “I’m going to destroy the need for remedial courses!”

I couldn’t see her lips as she spoke, “I was on the fast-track, you know. They told me I’d gain the knowledge and skills to be successful.” She raised her hand to her chin. She was looking towards me now.

“They tell everyone that, sweetheart. But look at the enormous failure rate in American high schools.”

“I didn’t drop out. That’s not why I’m here with you.” This conversation was growing murky. It ended, without anything really being said.

I smiled but I doubt she could see it.  Her eyes are now black pits, but oh how they used to shine!
