Jack and Evelyn on a date. What would her mother think?
“Man, that was a bad movie,” Jack said.

“Yeah, I’ll say. Snore!” Evelyn responded in kind.

“I mean how lame can you get? Teenagers would not act like that.”

“Not a chance. Can you imagine that at our high school? Pullleeez.”

“We’d have been suspended for sure. That just wouldn’t have been tolerated.”

Jack offered his arm to Evelyn.

“Well, thank you.” Evelyn smiled up at Jack. “How about some dessert or we could go to Starbucks?”

“Now you’re talking. A frapi… fripi…”

“Frappuccino.”

“Yeah, that’s it. Those are great.”

“You’re such a kook. I love it. I think I’ll take you home and chain you to my bed.”

“What would your mother say?”

“Can we not talk about my mother? I thought we went out to get away from my mother.”

“All right. Let’s just avoid the subject. She’s never been cool.”

“Hey, that’s my mother. Just drop it.” Evelyn feigned hitting Jack in the arm, as they arrived at the car. “You’ll have to drive. I forgot my license. It’s in my other purse.”

“Surprise. Your mother is right about you being absent-minded.”

“Stop. We were having such a good time.”

“You’re right. I’m sorry.” Jack leaned in for a kiss. Evelyn obliged, but as they separated Jack’s shirt caught on her pin. Evelyn carefully unstuck them.

“You seem nervous. This isn’t like our first date.”

“I remember. You asked me out in the middle of the hallway, right in front of my two best friends. That’s when I knew.”

Jack and Evelyn laughed and smiled. Their eyes twinkled in the starlight. They paused and felt a spark between them. They kissed again passionately.

“Wow. Maybe I should have let my mother move in a long time ago.”

“Don’t go ruining our first date in three years now.”
