Chapter 2

The next morning I was woke early by a racket in front of my bedroom door. I turned to face the alarm clock, ‘7:30!’ Falling back into my pillows I rubbed my aching head. ‘Feels like I haven’t slept at all.’ I gave a big yawn.
The screams and shouts loudend. I jumped up and ran to the door. I turned the knob of the handle gently. The door clicked open silently and I pulled it in just a little to peek trough.
Standing in the hallway near there bedroom, was Lucile and Peter. You could tell by there angered expressions and raised voices, that they were in a heated conversation. I opened the door a little more to try and hear what they were talking about. I strained my ears but none of it made sense. ‘A mental hospital in New York City. What’s that all about?’
Suddenly the door got pulled closed from the outside. I pulled at the knob, but couldn’t even turn it. Someone was holding it tight. “Keep your voices down. There are others trying to sleep.” It was Jake. ‘Why did he pull the door close. What doesn’t he want me to hear. Now I really want to know.’ I try to turn the knob again. “It will budge.” I said out loud.
Out of nowhere the door flung open and hit me right in the head. I fell to the ground at the same instance that I gasped for air. I moaned as my head hit the carpet. I stared at the roof dazed, when Jake stepped into my vision. ‘OMG!!! He’s shirtless. What, what have I done to deserve such punishment?’ I shook my head and he kneeled next to me. “May, are you alright?” he asked. ‘He has to ask? It’s the obvious. You! That’s what’s wrong with me.’ “I didn’t mean to hit you on the head.”
I focused my eyes and got up slowly. “Ouch!” I moaned. ‘It stings a bit.’ I touched my forehead lightly. ‘A definite bruise.’ He took my head in his hands and examined the bump. ‘Why always me? Why do I have to be the one in the middle of disasters.’ I instantly remembered last night and let my hand down on my stomach facing palm down. ‘Defiantly don’t need another lecture about it.’
Jake leaned forward and ever so gently laid a kiss down on my bumped forehead. It took me by surprise and all I could do was sit there and stare at him. He smiled. He’s perfect crooked smile. I was jelly. He stuck his hands underneath my body and swooped me up and laid me down on my bed like I was a small child.
He leaned down on the bed, arm’s on each side of my head flexing his muscles as he supports his weight. Before I could even ask what he’s doing, he pressed his lips down on mine and gently moved them. I closed my eyes and tried to memories the moment for future recollection. Strangely, I thought his lips would be hard and rough. But they weren’t. Silky soft, gentle but cold, deathly cold.
‘I know I have to stop but I don’t want to. Ohh, lets just enjoy it while we can.’ I moved my lips hastily on his. Grabbing him behind his head and crashing our mouths together. He suddenly stopped and pulled his head free from my grip so easily.
I slowly whimpered my eyes open. The room was empty, the door clicked into place. I got up slowly, still dazed and breathless. ‘WOW!’ I rubbed my head to clear the fog. “Agg!” I groaned. ‘I forgot about the bump. Damn.’
‘Why did he leave so sudden?’ I walked out the door and down the hallway to his bedroom. I quietly knocked on the door. No answer. I knocked again, this time harder. Still no answer. I sighed with disappointment.
“Maygan, go get dressed your going to be late for school.” Lucile yield as she walked past me. She turned and faced me as she got to the end of the hallway. “Did you hear me young lady, now!” She yield again. I just kept staring at her blankly. “Ughh!” she groaned and stomped down the stairs. I lift my eyebrows and shook my head. “Crazy woman.” I whispered out load.
I turned to Jakes door again and couldn’t help but to frown. ‘Why would he kiss me and then just leave not saying anything?’
Peter walked past me just then. He had a frown on his face too and looked deep in thought. He isn’t my father, but some how I have so much respect for the man.
He got to the end of the hallway and suddenly saw me standing there. “Is everything alright May?” he asked with still the same frowned look on his face. I couldn’t help my self but to ask. “Why were you and Luc … I mean mom fighting?”
A moment of silence filled the space between us. When he finally spoke he looked sad which took me by surprise since he is a man that hardly ever show emotion. “We are only going through a rough patch. Things will clear up soon. You’ll see.” He turned away from me again and then back.
“Are you sure every thing is alright with you, May? You know you can come to me any time, day or night. Even if it is only to listen.” I nodded and he smiled back, then turned and walked down the stairs. We have an understand between us if nothing ells.
I turned, glanced at Jakes door one last time and slugged of to my room. ‘Today was the last day of regular school.’ I thought as I closed my door behind me. I walked over to my desk and checked the calendar on the wall. ‘Monday would be the start of the mid-term exams. And to my luck, I started with Trig, my FAVOURITE subject. Also the only one I’ve been failing for the past couple of months.’ I snared at the calendar as I thought about the dreaded date.
‘The study dates with Jake didn’t help much either. He’s way to distractive for me to even give a damn about the Trig work.’ I frowned as I thought about earlier. ‘I don’t get it. Not at all. Guy’s are definitely a species of there own.’
I got up and yanked my closet open. I stared at the clothes like I was trying to see through them and yet not seeing anything at all. “Arrgg!” I utter and flung around. I trough myself onto the bed head first, an ache shot through me and I gently laid my head back on the sheets. “This is a disaster.” I muttered into the sheets.
‘I’ve fallen in love with a guy I’m not supposed to, I have the exams knocking on my door, which by the way I’m not nearly prepared enough for and I have a zit.’ I lifted my head up slowly from the sheets and stared out in front of me. “Aaaaaaaaaaa!” I screamed as loud as I could.
‘I have a zit … on my face! No, no way. Not the morning before the biggest party of the entire school year. The only one, that at this stage, I‘m willing to get worked up for. The one I’ve been looking forward to all semester.’
I sat up on the bed and groaned. ‘Looks like this was going to be one of those days. I’d better get a start on it. The sooner it ends the better.’ I felt the pimple on my fore head. ‘Guess I can cover it up with make-up and a fake fringe.’ I jumped up from the bed and turned around instantly as the bed side table drawer shut loudly behind me. “Danielle?”
“Who’s Danielle?” My mother asked. “No one.” My eyes fell to the pink packed in her hand, the other held a glass of water. “Oh my word Mother. Are you going to do this every morning?” I rolled my eyes and sighed deeply.
She popped one of the small yellow pills out and walked around the bed to me. “Yes. Now drink.” She handed me the water and pill which I reluctantly took from her. Looking at the pill for a moment, I put it into my mouth and swallowed a small amount of water.
“Open up.” I opened my mouth so she could inspect it. “Good. Now get ready for school or you’ll be late.” She grabbed the glass from my hand, spilling some of the water on the carpet, and stomped out the room.
I spit the pill out angrily. It flew under my dressing table and against the wall lace. “Like I need it anyways.”
“Did you say something?” Lucile asked popping her head back around the doorway. “No.” “Get dressed for heavens sake Maygan.” I didn’t answer anything back. Instead I just stared at her with my arms folded across my chest.
“Argh!” she screamed and turned, slamming my door shut. “Thanks for closing my door.” I mumbled.
I turned and walked over to my closet. Opening it again and sighed. “Another day in paradise.” I picked out a simple grey long sleeve shirt. Paired with comfy jeans, sneakers and my black leather jacket. Looking in the mirror, I stared at the selection of clothes as I held it to my body. “Cat will moan again, but who cares. Leather is back in fashion right now.”
“Keep telling yourself that honey, maybe one of these days someone might actually believe you.” I turned and saw her sitting on the bed, legs crossed and back perfectly straight. I wanted to scream from fright, but all that came out of my mouth was wind. I stared at her wide eyed. ‘She was back. She was really back.’
It felt like someone knocked the wind right out of me. ‘I really thought she was gone this time.’ “Boo!” she yelled and then fell back into my pillows shacking with laughter.
I turned back to the mirror staring at myself in it. ‘I hate reflections.’ I felt like I could cry. ‘How am I ever going to get rid off her?’ I turned on my heals and headed for the bathroom.
“Oh come on May. Your not still mad about last night.” She yelled as I closed the bathroom door. “Last night. Right who would still be mad. Not me.” I rolled my eyes and shut the door tightly. “That’s the spirit May.”
“Argh! You have some nerve.” I snarled at the door. Throwing the clothes on the floor I walked over to the shower and turned the warm water on. ‘You’d think because this castle is filled with so much riches, it would have at least a better water system.’
I pulled my hair into a bun on top of my head and pinned it tight. ‘Definitely not going to have a repeat of last nights hair drying disaster.’ I stared at my hand. It was still deep red and stiff. In places it looked like it could be blue but I wasn’t sure since it ached everywhere.
Grabbing a towel from the stack on top of the laundry basket, I stopped and staired at the towel. I scanned around the room. The bathroom was neat and clean. ‘The maids must have came in when I was still sleeping.’ Nothing out of the ordinary around here, the maids start early since the house is so big.
‘But they never start in my room since they know I’m always late. Guess even she needed a change of scenery. I must have slept like a rock not to have heard the vacuum cleaner.’ I groaned internally as I stepped out of the shower. The air was cool. I rapped the towel around me tightly and made my way to the mirror.
Wiping the steam of the mirror I was startled by the ever growing pimple on my fore head. ‘You’d swear it had a live of its own.’ I was horrified by the thought of going through to night like this. The mirror was fogged up again and I felt relieve. I put my clothes on fast and applied cream to my face, blobbing the pimple and my hand at the same time.
I opened the door just to be greeted by Danielle’s laughter. “What’s so funny?” she starred at me with mocking eyes. Her lips quivered slightly. She looked at me up and down. As her eyes moved back up and her head fell back and roared with laughter.
I turned and looked in the vanity mirror. ‘Well typically, it’s frizz. There’s nothing I can do about it now, I’ll have to wash my hair before tonight.’ I grabbed my sling bag of the desk chair and slung it over my shoulder as I stomped out the door. I closed the door behind me, Danielle was still laughing on the bed.
I made my way down the stairs, trough the entrance and grand room into the kitchen. “Morning zit face.” Jessica said sarcastically. I yanked my head in her direction and gave her a grueling stair. I opened my mouth and closed it again not saying anything.
I took my place at the table next to Jake. I turned slightly in my seat to look at him biting my lower lip. He was staring straight ahead off him. ‘I wonder if I did something wrong. None of the events of last night or this morning could justify this type of behavior from him.’ He suddenly turned in my direction and stared into my eyes. It almost looked like he was trying to stair me down. A smile broke on my face. It felt like my chest was warmed from the inside again.
The screeching sound his chair made as he pushed it out was defining and purposeful. His eyes didn’t leave mine as he took his jacket of the extra chair next to him and a few books in the other hand. It didn’t hit me what he was doing until he said it. “I’m leaving. Are you coming?” I jumped up from my chair and crabbed my book bag of the floor.
“Not so fast young lady.” Lucile said as I turned for the door. “Yes mother.” I barked back. “You have to be home straight after school this afternoon. Peter and I have a lot to discuss with you.” “NO!” I said back sharply. “Excuse me? What did you just say?”
“You heard me. NO.” “I am not asking you, I am telling you to be here at three o’clock and not a minute later. You need to remember who is the parent here.” I laughed. I laughed so hard I thought I might cry. “You the parent? Since when? The only time your ever the parent, is when you feel inadequate with yourself. Which is more often then I need it to be. And for your information, I’m going shopping this afternoon with my friends. So why don’t you have this very important meeting by yourselves.” I was so close now I could smell the breath mint in her mouth. Her form of breakfast. I turned on my heals and walked away not hearing another sound from behind me.
As I closed the front door the red Porsche was waiting for me in the driveway. I hurried over to it. Before I could get the door handle the door slid open. “Ouch!” I said almost whispering it. ‘Ever since Jake got this car I keep forgetting to duck low enough when I get in. Damn pull-up doors.’ I rubbed my head lightly.
The wheals screeched on the paving as Jake hit the fuel. I reached for the door and slammed it close. I turned and looked at him shocked. ‘Normally he let me put my seatbelt on first but today he won’t even let me close the door. I guess it’s best to leave him alone. I’ll confront him about his bad mood at lunch time. Maybe he’s calmer then.’
The rest of the ride to school was quiet. I didn’t have anymore energy left in me to deal with all the insane stuff. This was going to be a long ass day …
