Simple gestures of friendship can change everything.
                                    Lances Friendship Day

Wordcount: 999

Tommorrow was friendship day. Perhaps the only reason Lance even remembered this was because of the many banners and signs constantly being displayed around the small Arkansas city he lived in. In a mere 12 hours or so, the sun would be rising and people all across the world would be celebrating their friendships with loved ones. For Lance, this would not be the case. Ever since he was a kid untill now, a few short months from his 21st birthday, he had despised the day with all his heart. You see, many years ago, when Lance was 13, he had also been a huge fan of friendship day. On the special day, he would call up his friends, and let them know how much they meant to him. On his 13th friendship day, however, everything changed for him. He went down to the public pool to hang with his friends. All was well, untill, suddenly, they turned on him. "Lance, your the only one here who won't do a frontflip!" They mocked him, laughing at his cowardice.

"I don't want to get hurt," he replied calmly.

"We've all done it a thousand times!" His friend, Xavier, taunted.

"I'm not telling you what to do, why do you feel the need to tell me what to do?" Lance questioned him, curiousity in his eyes.

"Look," Xavier barked. "If your too scared to do a frontflip, who knows what else your too scared to do. Girls don't like wimps, and they don't like people who hang out with wimps. Either do a frontflip, or you can kiss our friendship goodbye!"

Lance stepped back, taking aghast by what he had said. He looked around at his other friends, waiting for them to back him up, but they all just looked at him with disappointment. "Some friends you guys are!" Lance shrieked, tears coming to his eyes. This was awful! Here he was, hanging with all his friends - wait, no, ex friends - on friendship day, and they pulled this on him? Had they no heart? Lance replaced his sadness with pure hatred and anger. He moved forward, pushing Xavier into the water, and ran. As he ran, he could hear the lifeguards, and Xavier and his friends yelling after him to come back, but he didn't. He kept running untill his feet were sore, and his legs cramped up. He sat down beside a fallen tree, and from that day on he swore to never, ever, makes friends again. What did they ever do for him? Nothing. He put all his trust and friendship to his friends, and they turned around and stabbed him in the heart.

Now, on the eve of friendship day, Lance sat alone in his apartment. Tommorrow, he would not spend his day with friends; he would spend it like he spent most of his days now, alone at his apartment, and then off to work his nightshift job as security at his local bank. Lance sighed and went to bed, not expecting tommorrow to be any different than any of his most recent friendship days. That night, he dreamt of change; he dreamt of celebrating friendship day like most of the rest of the world.

Lance stood up with a jolt, shocked by his unexpected dream. He pushed the dream aside as silly, but deep inside he wondered if the dream meant something. Maybe he had been a bit harsh; just because of his old friends being backstabbers, that didn't mean everyone was like that. Lance decided, over a long period of thinking, that he might aswell give it a shot. He went outside, walking downtown to see what was up. In the middle of the town, at the town square, festivities were being held, inviting everybody, regardless of age or size, to join. Lance took the oppurtunity in a heartbeat, racing to the square. They were holding a game of magic chairs, and he jumped right in. The game went on untill it was just him and another male his age. He brokethrough and won, and jumped up in excitement. He had nobody to share the victory with though, and after a few moments settled down.

Lance strolled around, checking out the festivities. He looked around for somebody - anybody - he knew, and his eyes finally came to rest on his work buddy, Chester, his girlfriend, and another girl around his age. He set off towards them, greeting them with a casual "Sup."

"Lance!" Chester greeted, embracing him. "I thought you hated friendship day," he noted, looking at him strangely, between squinted eyes.

Lance just laughed. "Lets just say, things have changed," he replied eagerly. "What say we grab something to eat?" he suggested. Chester and the other two girls responded with a furious headshake, so they started towards the nearest food vendor. He sat down beside the no named girl, who he later found out to be called Silvia. He started small talk with her while Chester ordered a pizza for the group. Lance better got to know Silvia while Chester held hands with his girlfriend, who, he also found out to be named Crystal. The day continued as usual, untill finally the sun set, and the festivities came to a close. Lance smiled at Silvia as they hugged, and he said his goodbyes to Chester and Crystal.

"Good seeing you, Lance," Chester called after him as he started walking back to his apartment. "Lets do it again sometime; and bring Silvia and Crystal," he said, a smile evident on his face.

Lance opened up the door of his apartment, and sat down on his bed. He grabbed his cellphone, adding the number Silvia had gave him; he also saw a text from Chester, whom he had told to text him. He sent Silvia a message saying: " Had fun :)" and set his phone on the bedside, slowly drifting asleep, memories of the lifechanging day buzzing in his mind.
