Sometimes one cannot do anything about what circumstances dictate...
Flash of Joy

I felt a twinkle of joy today.

Was it brought on by the Rufous Hummingbird
chirping at its reflection in my window?
The radiantly coloured fountain of flowers
pouring from the hanging basket by the door?
The sweet scent of cedar
lingering in the mid summer air?
The gentle touch of morning sun
on jewelled dew laden grasses?
The ethereal song of a Swainson's Thrush
descending from a nearby stately hemlock?
The giddy greeting of a Black-Capped Chickadee
calling from the nearby emerald holly tree?
The soaring Red-tailed Hawk
Seeking awakening thermals?
And so much, so much more...?

No.

What made my heart flutter
like the wings of the swallow-tailed butterfly
flitting over the gaudy hydrangeas by the fence
was none of those wonders.

It was a wish of seeing you today
that sadly, swiftly faded like a soundless sigh.
