What does Kelli find when she visits her boyfriend's apartment?
"Scott?" I called out. I opened the door to Scott's apartment and nervously stepped in. Scott never left his door unlocked like that. I studied the living area, settling on a trail of blue rose petals leading down the hall and into his bedroom. I took small, hesitant steps towards the petals. I made myself walked down the narrow hallway, no matter how scared I was. Along the walls were pictures of Scott and I. When we took a road trip to North Carolina, when we visited his grandparents in Colorado two summers ago. I stopped in front of the last picture, the closest to his room.
The photo was of us when we both took place in our best friend's wedding. I was the maid of honor and he was the best man. That was the first day we met, we connected instantly. The picture caught me looking up into his eyes as we danced with each other. I slid my finger around the edge of the frame and smiled.
I continued the next four feet into Scott's room. I gently swung open the door and gasped. On the bed laid blue rose petals and a little black box. I never took my eyes off the box as I walked over to the bed. I cupped the box in my hands and let the velvet tickle my skin. I sat on the hardwood floor and leaned against the bed.
Inside the box was a beautifully, hand carved diamond ring. The stone almost resembled a heart, but swirled instead. Along the sides, tiny aquamarine stones lined the diamond. A small tear escaped my eye and landed on ring.
I slid the ring upon my ring finger and sighed. "Perfect fit." I whispered. I kissed the stone and laughed inside. A noise outside the door broke my fantasy, but in a way made it a fairytale.
"Will you marry me?" Someone whispered. I looked up into Scott''s face. He leaned against the door jam with a single, blue rose in his left hand, which was held to his heart. Scott walked over and took his hand in mine. He lowered himself to the floor beside me and tucked the rose behind my ear. He stared into my eyes with a love so powerful, I couldn't look away. I touched my lips to his and stayed there.
Scott looped his arm around my waist and pulled me against his body. My hand caressed his face and made it's way to his neck. I pulled back and hugged him tight.
"Never let go." I whispered to him.
"I promise." He said into my hair. And he never did.
