A Country song for Country Mom's Contest
The stars won't shine tonight
and nothing seems right.

Nights in Baton Rouge and days in pain.
In a doorway, shelter from the rain
singing to old Bobby McGee
I realize what loneliness means to me.

Two more bottles of wine later
no fancy restaurant with a waiter,
more cold drops on my neck,
and no way to pay the check.

The stars won't shine tonight
all alone, no moonlight.

George Jones in my head,
I remember what Possum said.
"He stopped loving her today,"
and I stumbled away.

Deeper into a rainy nightmare,
forgetting the words to prayer.
I'm singing "Wings of a Dove,"
trading God for the rain above.

The stars start to shine their light.
Maybe things will turn out right.

The stars start to shine their light.
Maybe things will turn out right.
