With war, the Children of the Dead are in danger... Melissa is too.
Prologue

Dear Reader,

I'm an adult now. I live with my husband with my two little girls in my little house. I chat with my friends whenever I have time. I laugh as a flip through the albums.

It sounds like a boring, typical human adult, doesn't it? You've got it wrong. I'm no typical adult you think of. I live in the outer core, not letting my guard down anytime or anywhere. I'm a Children of the Dead, so is my husband and my daughters, and my descendants will be too. I'm the complete opposite of ordinary.

I've lost my parents at war with humans, I've fought for our freedom since I was one hundred and twelve years old. I've gotten victory when I was one hundred and fourty years old. If you want to convert it into human age, I was twelve when I first started fighting, and I stopped fighting when I was fourteen.

I'm thinking as I'm writing this; am I really doing the right thing? I feel that I'm making some big mistake. Will you understand why I'm doing this? Will humans think about what they've done, and regret it? That's beyond my knowledge. The wars between us... will they ever end?

I'm trying to tell you the tragic story that I, Melissa Brown, had to endure at the age you all would be studying. Maybe, as unbiased children of the new world, I suppose you would learn from my story.

So please, read this carefully. Beware, once you have read this, you're also in danger.

Sincerely,

Melissa Minerva Brown

Chapter 1

Jake Queen was pacing, chewing his thumbnail as he waited. His wife, Rachel Queen, had not returned from the grocery store, and Melissa, his daughter, hadn't returned from her friend's house... With the rumor of Them coming, he was especially nervous about Rachel and Melissa being late.

As he felt a presence, he quickly reached for his dagger and held his breath. As the person opened the door, he held his dagger up front.

"Jake?" It was Rachel and Melissa who popped up.
