Part of a book, si-fI, that I have been working on. End of time.
The government was not sure where it began. Some say China in and around Shangri. I don’t think it matters. The worst part is they let it get out of control. Starting in large population centers first and spreading out to rural areas from people bringing their sick in for treatment. Only there was not treatment. Those who had sick family members were sick themselves. There were many names for it; H1N1, Ovarian flue, Bird flue. No matter, if you caught it, there was no hope. The government told people to stay home. Death at home was as good as death in a hospital. For some, the only way out was to leave the cities. This caused massive traffic jams where the sick died in their cars. The military was no help, most were sick themselves. Everyone wore masks. For some it helped, but some it did not. If you had it, mask or not, it was a death sentence. People looked to the church, but where crowds gathered, the sickness followed. It seemed the only answer was no interaction with other people. Even then, groups of less than twenty would contract the sickness.
Jason Brand, a construction worker from the Washington DC area had spent his vacation time fishing in the mountains of Northern West Virginia. His first week was spent in a small cabin in a little known part of the Lost Forest National River area. For seven days he had no news of what was going on in the world. He knew of reports from China about people dying of some sickness, but though nothing of it. People died in China all the time from food poisoning or a new strain of the flu. And with no contact from the outside world, he had know way of knowing the magnitude of the problem.
