A small town teen finds the perfect guy. Or at that's what she believes.
"I won't hurt you, I promise."
Won't. Hurt. Promise. The words echoed in my head. He lied. He lied to me. He looked at me with those eyes and he lied.
***
It a breezy summer day, half-way through July. I was 15, young, practical and determined to get out of this town that was desperately trying to trap me. I live in a small coastal town, and, for the most part, everyone knows each other. So when the Hedlunds moved from across the country, it was a big deal. They ended up moving right next door to us.
When my mother invited them to dinner, I ended up meeting Chris, their 16 year old son. He had dark brown hair, but his eyes were what caught my attention. They were a pale green, and very lively. I avoided his gaze throughout the entire evening, hoping I could avoid any conversation with him. This plan evidently failed after dinner, when our mothers were getting drunk together and he started talking to me.
"Do you ever speak?" He asked.
"No," I replied to his stupid question.
"That's too bad. Are you mute or just quiet?" He challenged.
"I'm deaf, blind, and mute, as a matter of fact."
"So you would be surprised if I did this?" And he kissed me. His lips were surprisingly soft, because I had imagined they'd be as sharp as his tongue. But I didn't get to enjoy it, because I was too busy freaking out.
"What are you doing?" I screeched.
"Sorry...I just saw you stare at me during dinner...and, I don't know. I thought maybe you liked me back."
