A husband's joking words hurt his wife more than he realizes.
You were with your buddies
laughing and sharing stories
when you looked at me and said
you have no one to impress anymore
I'm just the wife

You thought you were being funny
making the guys chuckle
but you didn't see that it hurt me
you expected me to laugh along
but I couldn't

You once told me you wanted
a friend, a cheerleader,
someone to admire you
so that's what I've done
for three years

You enjoy it when I
sit and watch you work
making you feel special
but when you're with your friends
you forget

You change around the guys
don't you realize they see
how your words were hurtful
they compliment me
why don't you

You think you're the very life
of every party or cookout
but my heart dies a little
when you say I'm
“just the wife”
