A flash fiction story.
I awoke in a groggy state. I sat up and looked around the harsh environment. Where am I? I thought. I examined the grains of sand that seemed to stretch on as far as the eye could see. How did I get here? Where was everyone? The last thing from my memory was me sitting in the car with my family. I must have dosed off they’ll probably be back for me in a while.

Hours passed and the merciless sun moved directly overhead. Oh no. Sand without sign of life…I must be in the desert! My family must have already perished. I would also be doomed to waste away into a rotting corpse becoming one with this barren wasteland. Oh cruel world you have been kind. I sunk down to the ground and let the sand form around my body.

After sitting a while more in the afternoon heat I saw something streak across the skyline. Hope started to build within me until I realized, my family’s car sat less than 200 feet from me. “Sweetie I hope you enjoyed your time at the dunes today. Though you did do a whole lot of wallowing around in the sand.” I climbed back into the car and looked out the window as my own personal mirage faded from my view.
