Written for 'Rising Stars Shining Brighter.' My first poem as a rising star!
Why do I enjoy the night
Like distant spirits, ghosts and sprites?
What is it of the echoed beats
Of heavy feet on damp, black streets?

I'm inhaled by open roads
Convincing me that time has slowed,
And taken in by yellow lamps
Reflected by the black and damp.

Moons remind me I will die
Though I don't answer with a sigh,
But step alive and on instead,
Each step announcing, 'I'm not dead!'

In the night I am unseen,
Exist below, beneath, between.
I am not heard or even missed
But met by streets that bend and twist.

I enjoy the night because
Of cold and wet and other flaws.
For in the night such loneliness
Becomes a cold, unflinching bliss.
