First chapter- or at least I think -of a new story I'm writing, called Lost.
''Is she dead?'' a kid's voice asked.
''No, no! Of course not. Look, she's waking up already.'' a girl said.
I opened my eyes. Above me, two pairs of big, green eyes were staring at me.
The girl smiled friendly, the boy looked curious. He was about to open his mouth, when he suddenly noticed my hand.
''What's that?'' he asked me. I opened my hand confused. In my hand, there was a little, silver key. I had no idea how I got it, let alone what it was for.
I shook my head, to let the kid know I didn't have an answer to that question.
''Are you okay?'' the girl asked me. I looked at her, stunned. No one else asked me that before, as long as I could remember. Not that I could remember much.
Who was I? What was I? How do I use my body, how do I speak?
I nodded, but then shook my head. I didn't know if I was okay. Was it normal for me to not be able to speak?
I looked at the little key in my hand again. Would it have anything to do with this thing?
I looked at the two kids again. Well, the girl was about twelve or thirteen years old, not that much of a kid anymore. I wondered how old I was. Was I still a kid?
''Can't you speak?'' the little boy asked me. I looked at him. He was still young, so would he understand?
I shook my head and pointed at the key. The boy looked at it.
''What does it unlock?''
I shrugged. The girl reached out her hand. She smiled encouraging at me. I tried to smile back, and took her hand.
We walked in silence, though the boy was excited to ask me more questions. His big sister was the only reason he wouldn't.
Get out of my body, you bitch!
With a shock I looked behind me. There was no one there. Did I imagine it?
''Is something wrong?'' the girl asked me. I shook my head.
You sure? You're hearing voices. Don't tell me you think that's normal.
I got a bit scared now. There was no one there, yet someone was talking to me. Was she mad?
God, you just don't get it, do you?
I took a deep breath.
Who are you?
Something inside me told me the woman was rolling her eyes.
''Gosh, girl. Are you stupid or something?'' she asked me.
I guess. I don't even know how to talk.
''That's because you're in my body. I'm still trying to control it, or at least my mouth.'' she explained to me. It didn't make any sense though. How did I appear in someone else's body?
Why am I in your body? How did I get here?
The woman waited before she answered.
''You mean you really don't know?''
I shook my head.
''You took it from me. Took everything over: my body, my life, my family, my friends. You ruined everything, but I won't let you win.''
I gasped. No, I wouldn't do that! I would never do that! I'm not like that. ...Am I?
The woman sighed, like she was getting impatient.
''Look, I just want my body back okay?''
I just want my memory back. But that's not happening is it? I'm sorry, but I didn't do anything, so please. Let me speak.
The woman didn't answer. She didn't say a word, didn't sigh, nothing.
I opened my mouth.
''Where are we going?'' I asked. It sounded weird. Not right. Not me. Maybe the woman was right after all?
The two kids looked at me surprised. Maybe they told themselves that I couldn't speak.
''To our home.'' the girl said. The boy looked at me eagerly. First he looked at his sister for approval. She sighed, then nodded.
''Who are you? Where are you from? Why do you have that key?'' he took a small breath and then asked his last question. ''Why are you here?''
''I don't know.'' I said. The boy pouted. He didn't like my answer at all.
''So you have, like, amnesia?''
I shrugged.
''I guess.''
''Cool.'' the kid said with a big smile. I pulled an eyebrow while looking at me.
''That wasn't the word I was looking for.''
''Why not?'' the boy asked me, while we came closer to the little village I noticed a few seconds earlier. I looked at him. He was so young, he just didn't get it.
''Well, I don't know who I am, where I came from. I don't know who I am, who I'm working for, nothing. It's just creeping me out. I just wished I at least knew my name.''
The boy looked at me excited. Oh gosh, here it comes, was the first thought that ran through my mind
''Then let me think of a name!'' he decided. ''Besides, it may be scary, but isn't it also exciting? Repeating your life like this, it's like you got another chance!''
I looked at him in surprise. This kid was smarter than he looked. He was a lot wiser than any grown ups I've ever met, or at least that was what my mind was telling me.
''Look, we're here.'' the girl said. All this time she didn't say a word. She just listened to her brother, smiling. That was probably not the first time he said something that smart.
As soon we entered the village, I knew I shouldn't have come there. Everything in my body felt wrong. The urge to run away was big.
Get out of here, now.
She finally spoke to me again, after almost half an hour. She clearly didn't want to be here either.
Just when I opened my mouth to tell the kids that it was better for me to leave, it was too late.
