First Frost

The church bells clang
Signaling that the first frost
is encroaching

The wind rustles and scatters
the golden leaves
Fallen from their birdseye home

Gardens torn and tattered
Flowers and crops once so beautiful
Lay mangled and dead

Their celebration of the harvest
What was sown and reaped
Now forgotten as the bitter cold sets in

Demeter is stalking
Seeking her daughter Persephone
Killing the soil until she returns
