waiting for a night bus
a light drizzle
becomes a steady rain
an endless fall
the beating of window blades
that can’t wipe it away
fast enough (I’m on the wrong side of a fish tank)
ticking like a
metronome
until
the black umbrellas start circling around
the ancient tomb-
like terminal
like a clogged sink drain
the idling cabs smoking
exhaust clinging to the humidity
humming & choking
on my orange soda
and I need cigarettes
more than this
this flood, this waiting
and I can't even remember
what for

later,
in the McDonalds across town
the rain still falls and
I wonder
if somewhere in the night
a bus entered the city limits
