Bright forest

I walked through a bright forest one day,
Listening to the world around me, feeling the wind,
Looking into the foliage,
Searching for something I did not know.

Solitary people I saw on my walk,
As me, merely walking, appearing to search for something.
Not a word did we share,
Only understanding looks.

I believe, if I could look upon myself as they do,
I would share their expression,
One of searching for the unknown,
One of emptiness.

I walked for what seemed for years,
The forest changed around me.
The sounds and sights that seemed so familiar had gone,
Only those I gazed upon stayed the same,
Their eyes stayed forever the same,
Searching and empty.

As I began to tire, the forest changed once again,
No longer the light, in which I could so easily see,
No longer a place of ignorant meandering,
Now a place of despair.

In this place of darkness,
I realise what the reason of my searching was,
The need for the mourning smile,
A smile that revels in my presence as I do theirs,
But fears the soulful solitude when we part.

As I walked I made my fatal mistake, hope.
It grew as no other feeling has before,
A feeling of lose for something I never had.
A desperation for what I do not know.

I came to a river I did not know,
A break in my path.
You were there across this river,
I realise you were what I yearned for.

My mind began to wander,
Would I dare to cross,
Could I risk danger for you?
Would I die for the object I have searched for so long?

As I start to wade into the water,
My heart knows there is no other course for me,
There is not other course for you.
