Daily Flash fiction
She looked at him from across the room; he was just as she saw him every day for the last 10 years, tall, dark and handsome. He was engaged in an in depth conversation with the doctor. The smile she was familiar with was not there; it must be a serious conversation. He walked the doctor to the door, enough time to wipe away the tears from his eyes before turning back to her with a grin on his face. “Guess who gets to come home today?” he asked, arms outstretched. She looked up at him forcing the smile in her heart onto her tired face. She reached out to him, her spindly arms eager for his embrace. Everything was an effort today but she couldn’t let him know that, it would break his heart. With his cheek against hers, her heart dissolved and she caught her tears in the palm of her hands just in time. He squeezed her tight, but to distract himself, and keep his composure he gently pulled away saying, “we need to get your things together love, if we are going to get you home; you’ve been in here long enough.”
“Yes dearest” she responded “we must, but before you do that, will you just lie here with me for a moment?” She hated herself for not even being able to speak in full sentences, so weak!
“Of course my love, there is no rush” he whispered as he lay down curled behind her once curvaceous body, looking at her belonging dotted around the room. “I just want you back home my love” and with that, life drained from her. With her last breath she said “I am home.”
