What do people see, what do we choose to show?
She sat underneath the tree
The smooth bark embedded firmly at her back
The last ray's of sun at day's end peered through the leaves
Their touch on her upturned face curious and tentative
She appeared to the world at peace, content
Her eyes softly shut to all that surrounded her
As the sun dropped further and a chill damp began to settle she opened her eyes
And there was the truth of it
Just as the light had dipped from the world
So had that which once illuminated her eyes
Reflected now with disillusionment
Eyes now flat and lifeless while she sits alone
Waiting for the dark to envelop her
Wrap her in oblivion
Tomorrow she will rise
Go out into the world
Start another day
She will breathe in and out steadily
Her mask will descend
She will smile with brightness to one and all
There is only the occasional soul that sees her
Sees that the smile and the shine never reaches her eyes
