A civil war soldier to his lover
my dear love
i've finally time to write amidst this fight
i love you dearly and dream of you each night
and each night i get i take as a blessing
as the yankees press south and become more threatening
ive learned its a wild world an important lesson
man is hard to trust when consumed by aggression
one look in the eye and its easy to tell
a man whose body lives but whose souls in hell
its easy to stray at a time like this
but you give me hope and hope equals bliss
ill write when i can and i pray you write back
and love to keep your letters with your picture in my knapsack
you in my heart makes it beat forever
il be home soon
never say never

Last night i watched my bunk mate die
mauled by a cannonball which fell from the sky
he was from Louisiana
and worked the farm for his mama
yesterday he'd told me he'd nothing to live for
as we walked back to camp from the general store
i expect it was God himself who brought him death
for he knows all and hears each breath
and a life not wanted is a life worth taking
still i wonder why its my heart its breaking
it hurts me to great you with such a sunken chest
but i had to get it off and let it get some rest
if you knew what it was like you'd probably understand
but anyways are you good
are you grand
are your eyes still blue like the Georgia sky
is your hair still long like a rich mans tie
is your ma in good health
is your pa in good wealth
does my picture still hang in your room by the bookshelf
and if so does it remind you
of the time i spent inside you
one day soon i'll find you and
be forever beside you

Today i lead a motley crew of rebels
right down the throat of these yankee devils
we will not use stealth and we'll not try flank them
we will yell as we charge and our strength shall overtake them
when we have we'll stand tall on our dead foes chest
and we will take in gods world with an open breast
we will sink our flag deep
and will try not to weep
as any mountain can be peaked despite how steep
my doll your all i have
all i fight for
all i dream
its your memory which fuels the flowing of my bloodstream
your a breath of fresh air in a world so dreary
you warm my soul against a wind so cold
with you by my side i aim to grow old
