Reading the newspaper in my sun-room
when a thud hit the bay window
with an immediacy disquieting and intimate
... I jumped up and beheld a squirrel
eyes wild-black and beseeching,
generating a flurry of clawing clicks and fur at the divide
while clinging to a thin, slippery ledge
