My part of a collaboration story for school. Based on the Indiana tornadoes.
The music was so loud I couldn’t even hear myself think.
“Cool party bro!” I yelled over the music to Chace.
“Yeah I know right,” He yelled back “hey, have you seen the girls? I know their around here somewhere.”
“Naw they probably got held up, the weathers pretty bad.”
“Yeah I bet they’ll be here soon. I’m heading to the kitchen, you want a drink?”
I nodded and fallowed Chace to the kitchen pushing our way through the mobs of kids straining and dancing, moving to the rhythm of the music. We got our drinks and headed towards the living room to wait for Maddie and Ava. When they walked in I took Maddie in my arms.
“Hey babe, you made it”
She smiled up at me, “Of course we did, I wouldn’t miss a chance to party.”
Looking over at Ava I asked, “Hey, how bad were to the roads?”
“Awful! There’s so much rain and the wind shook the whole car. I had to pull over and let Maddie drive.”
I looked worriedly at Maddie as my heart beat faster; she was okay but rain and strong winds during this time of year could mean disaster. I hid my thoughts from the girls but sent Chace a worried glance and knew he was thinking the same thing from the look on his face
Seconds later the electricity went out with a pop, darkness and the sound of the storm outside filled whole house. We all remained silent until the hum of the generator sounded, reassuring us. The low level emergency lights flipped on their dim glow cast a haunting yellow light on us all.
Jack, one of our classmates, stepped forward and pulled Chace over to talk to him. Heads close Jack whispered to Chace and showed him something on his phone, Chace nodded as Jack turned to leave and Chace turned to look at all of us.
“Alright,” Chace raised his voice speaking to everyone, “looks like the weather is getting worse, so we’re going to have to end the party early.”
There was a course of disappointed teenagers and the shuffling of feet. One by one everyone left and we were alone.
Chace looked at the girls, “I don’t want you two driving home in this weather. We’ll all just stay here tonight.”
With the music off we could hear the wind beating and pulling at the house. The rain sounded like someone throwing rocks at the windows. In the distant I could just make out the sound of sirens over the storm though I knew no one else could hear them. I sent Maddie a reassuring look and hugged her again.
“It’ll be ok.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah it’s just a storm.” But even I didn’t believe myself. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up the way it does when danger is near. I left Maddie and went to the window, watching the rain beat down.
That’s when I saw it; the swirling darkness blocking out all light and binging destruction straight towards us. I had no time to react; I just watched in horror as the tornado lifted a huge tree out of the front yard and swung it at the house. I flew back with the impact and heard screaming as I fell and then, nothing.
