Short story Writers Cramp Entry 901 words
Claire is waiting for his next move and sees nothing but hesitation. "It's not that hard. Just go a few steps further" she thinks "You have to risk sometimes" Claire tells him.

"Well, Claire, maybe I don't want to risk anything. I like things to go according to a specific  plan. That way, I am sure to win."

"Are you sure you're going to win now, Jack? I mean, look how far apart we are. Look how different our decisions were until now. How do you know that I am not going to win this?"

Jack smiles softly at her and makes his move handing the two dice over to her. Grabbing his hand and feeling for the dice she senses his tension and his true desire to win. His fist is so tight as if he is trying to crush the cubes.

"Sometimes you need to let go Jack" she tells him throwing a playful seductive look at him. His hand gets soft releasing the dice that Claire then throws on the table. One of them jumps off  and falls on the floor mysteriously disappearing. Instead of finding the the dice under the table, Claire meets Jacks' glare that seems to hypnotize her for a moment. His penetrating look nearly dissolves her as her fingers reaching for the dice go weak. He reaches it first and then their hands get locked. Jack briskly grabs the cube and returns to the game while Claire is still looking under the table, looking at nothing but thinking of so much. The spell was gone quicker then she would have wished and so she returns to the game as well.

"So, Jack, I see that you would do anything to win. Still, it is my turn at the dice now, so can you please hand it over back to me?
Jack looks at the dice in his hand, then at her and clenches his fist around it.

"I'm sorry Claire but you have missed your turn. The rules say..."

"You don't have to always play by the rules" she jumps and sits herself a little bit closer to him "Sometimes you have to re-write the rules into your advantage"

"And how would this be in my advantage" he asks her while watching her body getting even closer to him. One hand on his cheek, gently brushing it with her fingers and he already feels like a winner. A second later and Jack finds himself with an empty hand. Both dice are now with Claire.

"You're cheating" he tells to her.

"Like I said, sometimes you have to re-write the rules into your advantage. And don't pretend that you always play fair either. A minute ago..."

"A minute ago" he interrupts her "I was looking at you, how pretty your hair looked, tousled and all. If only..."

"If only you could take your hands away from my dice" Claire takes control of the situation and throws the dice on the table. A lucky shot, she thinks, and a well earned one as well. This battle was getting more difficult and they started to use a very different artillery now. She goes a few steps closer to the end of the board leaving Jack a lot behind. There are still a lot of traps until she could get to the finish line but if she could dodge them skillfully as only she could, then the game would be hers. However, Jack always knows how to find escape loops and ways to get ahead when he has his mind set on winning. The game is more like war to them and the more they play the more they feel that loosing is not an option.

"You know I've always been ahead of you, Jack. No matter what I do, I can play this game much better than you can. I never loose"

With an ironic smile Jack throws his dice on the table a reveals his next move, a laborious plan that he had in mind since the beginning. He knew the rules better and he knew exactly how to go around them.

"Into my advantage" he says and takes her pawn back to the same square as he was using "I waited for the perfect time to use my magic card and now we're equals. Dare to continue?" he asks her as if he did not know her answer already. She had forgotten all about his magic card and now all her plans were shattered.

"Listen" she says "I knew you were a tough guy but seeing such a soft side of you now is just adorable. Taking my pawn back to your little square just so that you could have me next to you is nearly romantic. The only problem is " she strongly emphasizes her point of view "that I always win no matter what."

Claire then takes her pawn and places it at the finish line. "I had a magic card too" she reveals. Perplexed, Jack looks at the board game and blinks only once, a very heavy blink, one that makes your daydream and thoughts last an eternity. All the questions that are running through his mind they are all answered at once. Taking a glance at her, he already knows. He knows his loss is her victory and he knows that her victory means everything to her. Loosing never felt better...
