Very inspiring short story.
A Look Through The Window, A glimpse Of Hope

I look through the window. In the distance is a rigid rocky mountain range, that stretcher heavenwards until it fades into the light blue sky. In front of me, is a barren desert which expands endlessly in all directions .This spot was chosen for a reason .It is going to be a long year! How am I going to survive with nothing but the stone walls for company and metal bars; and the never-ending brown sea for company? Desperately I search for something, anything that I can distinguish from the dull browns, a sigh of life, of hope and of inspiration. Then, when my heart is about to sink in despair, I notice it, a single stalk waving in the wind. My spirits soars. I go to sleep, slightly cheered.

Morning comes. I gaze contently at my stalk which, like me, has miraculously survived the night with its harsh winds and darkness that threatened to overcome both of us. Oh, how this brown shriveled stalk is the most beautiful and inspirational feature ever. As the wind pushes it from side to side and the sun beats down on it without mercy, it continues to survive. Now I know, there is a G-d because in a barren desert lives a stalk – a stalk of survival.

Another day – signs of last night’s drizzle are evident on my stalk. It is beginning to look healthier with a greenish tinge seeping its way up the stem. It, like me, has sought the bit of sustenance, inspiration and strength from a desert. The stalk, from the droplets of water it received; me, from that dash of green in a world of harsh brown which makes living in a cold dark prison of mattress less beds and stale bread worth living. Whenever I look through the window and see my stalk surviving, I am strengthened.

Day after day I watch in awe as, with the help of tiny droplets, my stalk begins to grow, becoming greener and healthier. When I cast my eyes on the living beauty I am renewed and invigorated. Slowly it even begins to sprout leaves. As it grows, I grow; as it becomes stronger so do I. With each passing day I am able to heal a – a constant healing, where I find peace within myself.

Then, comes the day when I am set free and I, a man whose heart is mad from stone, who was like a desert barren of emotion and feeling, am crying - a single tiny drop shining on a cold hard face. But I know as I take my last look through the window, at my stalk which is now a deep green with two lash leaves, that all I need is one tear for growth strength and beauty to follow because all it takes is one shriveled stalk to generate life.
