A unique poem about the importance of memories and the stuff we hold onto in our lives.

Just stuff
Things
A little of this
A bunch of that
Memories on shelves
Importance tucked away
In unmarked boxes
Too lazy to label
Too driven to have the time
Idealistic in my ways
For many things except
For that which surrounds me
Long after I live
Long before I am dead
I am sure that I
Will go through each box
Every shelf and dark closet
Placing items in categories
Like hope
Like loss
Like fears
Like things still very unclear
Everything that is no longer real
Shrunken down to manageable size
Helping me deal if and when
I am ready to do as much
Bric-a-brac
Memories passed
Frozen in frames
Molded into shapes
Of all that they are meant to replace
Stuffed in unpacked boxes
Just waiting for me to discover them
Shiny and dull
Rusted and some busted
Cracked and glued, then glued again
How many matters none
Each time I manage to find all of the pieces
Each time I manage to find a good reason
Photo albums full of pseudo strangers
That I swore up and down
I would have nothing to do with
Many past loves and many broken dreams
Some lost, some stolen, many taken away
The means to their end seems insignificant
Eventually I hope that the means to their end
Becomes without a doubt irrelevant
Just stuff
Things
A little of this
A bunch of that
Memories on shelves
Importance tucked away
In unmarked boxes
Bric-a-brac
All that I am
All that I know
And all that I’ve experienced
Such things are mine to keep
But certainly not mine to own
Through my words, and through others
Those who know me and those who don’t
Such things find meaning, purpose, and possession…
