300 word flash fiction contest entry. Prompt: Apple, Lake, Car.
I inched my car closer to the edge of the cliff, far above Blue Jay Lake. I loved the view from here. It was my favourite vantage point, holding dear memories to my heart. If you got close enough, it would feel as if you were floating above the trees, like a low, tree-top brushing cloud. You could see all the way to Chestnut Hill from here - an easy thirty miles, if not more.

I got out of my rusted Honda and moved to the front bumper, easing my toes to just flush with the lip of stone - my right hip even with the head light. I crunched the last bit of McIntosh apple that I picked from a tree near Daisy's place, and threw the core as far as I could. I could barely see it hit the surface of the water below, but it did so with a minute splash.

I look down towards the ripples I just made, ringing outwards in all directions. They evened out, and eventually disappeared into nothingness. A small fish gave me a salute from just underneath the surface, its fins just cresting the layer of air resting above the water. I smiled.

How could I leave all this? Should I leave all this?

My hands and arms tingled. I was only slightly feverish, but would get warmer in the next few minutes. Things in the distance suddenly became clearer, and my mind more focused.

That's it then.

My giant wings erupted forth from my back, with a snap, shredding my thin t-shirt. I felt the wind patterns now, and could smell the waves upon which I would glide. Leaping from the cliff, I cried one triumphant Squawk, and extending my wings to either side, I flew.

Goodbye world of man. Goodbye.
