How I feel and think about the notion of popularity
Popularity. Everyone wants to be popular. At least that's what it seems like in America(if not in other countries as well),popularity is considered a redeemable if not honorable position or feature in society today.Things like Facebook and Twitter and other social media have accentuated this apparent phenomenon. So much so  for the people who have five thousand friends on Facebook(and I HAVE seen them). So why is popularity considered such a big virtue? Inquiring minds want to know. I think in all honesty it's a combination of insecurity and a lack of social perspective,in my opinion. People want to feel recognized, like others know who they are. I think that in general,it's good to want to have friends, personally. But I also think what's important is the QUALITY not neccesarily the QUANTITY of them. Like, how can one talk to five thousand folks at the same time???? Do you even know HALF of them? Do you think that people will think higher of you if you have so many? I think in addition people are getting carried away with the notion of social acceptance,in that that they feel personally justified if someone "likes" them. Which I can understand,to some extent. But respect is better than like,I believe. Being "liked" is something sporadic like a beautiful sunny day or a bar of chocolate or watching a great movie-these things come and go,but respect is a life-long virtue to be aspired to. So don't feel left out if one is not as popular as one thinks one should be. Life is NOT a popularity contest.
