Once upon a time there was a raggedy doll, Sara-lee. She lived on the windowsill in the room of a small child. She watched everything with curiosity, but she didn't understand a lot of the world. She was not very clever.
The small child was a shy girl named Kate. She lived in a small house with her mum and her mummy's boyfriend. Kate missed her mummy. Mummy used to read and sing songs, but then Mummy met Boyfriend and they went to live with him. Now Mummy only ever sleeps and shouts, and she is always crying or angry, and she is always hurt and smells funny, not like Mummy at all.
Sara-lee watched the man sneak into the room every night. She saw him shake the small child awake and make her undress. She watched as his hands and his tongue made the girl cry. She watched him make the girl touch him, watched him get angry when she said no. Sara-lee didn't understand that this was not the life of a small child. She watched this happen every night for many years. When the girl got bigger, the man did things differently. He made her undress him, too. He pushed her over and lay on top of her. Sara-lee listened. The moaning and laughter of the man, and the crying and begging of the girl sounded like a beautiful song but the notes were all broken.
One day when the girl was alone in her room she pulled out a shiny thing from her backpack. Sara-lee looked with interest; she had never seen a toy like this before. The girl put it in her mouth and

BANG!!

she fell to the floor in a red puddle. Sara-lee thought this was the best game the girl had ever played and waited to see what she would do next. But she did nothing, and that night when the man came, he didn't make her undress. He didn't touch her, or push her down and lay on top of her. He kicked her, laughed, and went out again. Sara-lee was very confused. The man had never done that before, he and the girl always played the funny game. But while she was thinking about this, she heard him laughing and moaning, like when he played the game. And she could hear the girl crying and begging, too! But...the girl is on the floor. Who is playing the game with the man?

Sara-lee stayed on her windowsill. She never found out who played that game, but she heard them...every night...
For a very long time....
