My fight with depression
Who am I?

I am depression!
It is my job to put you down.
There is no rhyme and reason to what I do, it is just who I am!
My job is to kick you down and then kick again to keep you down
I take great delight in making you down for no reason,
It is my nourishment, my nutrition; it is how I feed myself by depriving you of all
You feel good; I will make you feel guilty
You feel hope; I will take it away
You feel happy; I will replace it with sadness
If you drink water, I will poison the well
I am here to spread misery; I am here to deny you friendship,
I am here to help you wallow in self-pity; I am here to make loneliness appear
I am more powerful than you could ever imagine, I am always by your side
You try to find things to do; you try to live your dreams
You have always wanted to write; I tease you along the way
You have so many stories in you; I hear and see them everyday
I know their beginnings and endings; I even know the journey along the way
But I will not allow them to escape; they will never see the light of day
They will remain hidden; that I know because I have the key
You try to find it; you talk to others to find a way
You know medication does not work; I am immune to all the little pills
So you talk to others for understanding; hoping that the key will one day be found and joy will be near
But when joy starts to appear, I will raise my head and that you should fear
Fighting me is so difficult, I am entrenched and I plan to stay that way
I am now back with a vengeance and I plan to make you pay
I am going to make your life more miserable; it’s my reason for being this way
You try so hard to fight me; but I am stronger than what the doctors say
Listen to me when I whisper it: ‘Life is not worth living anyway’
You see, I care for you so much; without you, I would not exist
You see, that life frightens you; I hide all that is good
You see, that is my reason for being; without me, what would life be like
Without me, you would have a life and leave me alone and that I can’t do.
Without me, your smile would be genuine
Without me, your laughter would be infectious
Without me, you would not understand
Understand me and we will get along
Understand there is no rhyme and reason to what I do, it is just who I am
It is my job to put you down
I am depression!
Fight me for all that it is worth
