A poem about realizing what you're letting go of.
I am the morning after
A night of heaving drinking
You are the pounding in my head
And the bitter pill I take

You are my big what-if
And my deep regret
I am the risk you took
And the mess in your head

You are the lump in my throat
I am the thorn in your heart
You are my I-know-better
I am your you-deserve-a-better-half

You are the pain in my shin
That crawls through me
Travels to my brain
And surrounds me entirely

I am everything you want
The song you cannot write
That word you don’t recall
The light you cannot find

We are typographical errors
In the greatest love story
A bump in the road
To the happy ever after journey

We are the rule—not the exception—
Bold, underlined, italicized,
Highlighted, punctuated twice (!!)
We define and not defy

I am your sad beginning
You are my bitter ending
And we are each other’s
Best memory slowly fading
