A knock at the door...
Knock. Knock. Knock.

Sean’s eyes flickered open. The pale light of the moon streaming through his window told him it was still night.

Knock. Knock. Knock. The same rhythmic, three-beat sound at the door. He slid out of bed and went downstairs.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Louder this time. You’re gonna wake my kid. Sean tugged the door open. “Do you have any idea what--”

There was nobody there.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

From upstairs now. Sean glanced up towards his son’s room. “Will, if that’s you…”

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Sean opened Will’s door and saw his son lying in bed, awake. “Will? Was that you?”

Will nodded. “Can you check under my bed for monsters?”

Sean sighed. “Yeah, okay.” He went to the bed and crouched down, lifting up the fabric.

Will stared back at him from under the bed, face pale. “Daddy,” he whispered. “Daddy, there’s something in my bed.”
