“Flight deck Commander, what is your report?” asked the Captain in a thinly veiled seductive tone. The captain had called his wife over the radio more times in the passed few weeks than he had actually seen her.
“The bird is refuelled and ready for the long haul, Captain.” Hearing her voice made him long for her.
“Copy that, darling. Crew, prepare for lift off.” They had been on the run for 15 weeks and the stress was starting to show in all their faces. “Trin, once we’re going, do you want to take a… break? I haven’t seen you all day… I miss you.”
“Ugh, not on the radio! Get a room Cap!” joked Scout, the head engineer on the lower deck.
“I intend to, Scout,” said the Captain as the ship revved and began cruising out of the fuel station. “But for now we have to get out of this star system and find somewhere safe to dock.”
The ship gained speed and after a short while Trin could put it into autopilot. She had been on the flight deck for almost 2 days with no sleep. “Go rest, Trin,” said her second, “I’ve got this.”
“Thanks Barry. I could use a break.”
“Say hi to the little ones for me.”
“You mean the not so little ones,” she smiled.
Trin arrived in their pod as John, the captain, was coming out of the shower. She fell into his arms, “do you think we’ll ever be able to stop running?”
“Right now the world outside doesn’t matter, it’s just you and me.” He pulled her closer and kissed her. They hadn’t been alone for eternity, it seemed. She moved toward the bed.
Knock! Knock!
“Mom? It’s us. Please open”
“Ah, man. Don’t let them in. Not yet…”
