Respect yourself before expecting respect from others.
It's a normal human tendency to expect to be a respected individual in the society. Just like the base of a lamp bares darkness, we try to keep up our self esteem and self respect everywhere in the society we live in and forget our own home.... where we try to be good to all and impress everyone around us. Without giving a thought to the fact that impressing others is just next to impossible, we tend to spend all our life compromising and giving up our self esteem and self respect.
We spend the major part of our life in trying to gain or earn respect from others without even letting ourselves understand the true meaning of respect with respect to kind of life we lead. Surrendering our true self and suppressing our true nature and pretending to be a total new individual is exactly what we do to earn respect. While we ignore the fact that we are not respecting our true self but pretending to be an individual who we actually are not.
We are earning or gaining respect from others at the cost of our self respect.
