Opening to a short story about aging
[Introduction]
I slowly step onto the icy path on the north side of the house. The winter shade on the north side has begun to retreat. The ground under the ice path won't reveal itself for a few more weeks, but I can see the Rorschach shadows forming on the fence, evidence of the sun’s slow trek from its winter home in the south back to the northern sky to spend the summer. The morning air is light and clean. The sun's rays finally penetrate the hazed glass of the greenhouse, trying in vain to awaken the remnants of last year's frozen harvest.

In January, only the top ridge of the greenhouse roof will see the sun's rays. By late February the sun has moved to a more northerly path and the winter shadows have retreated to expose the entire roof. A colorful palette of multi-colored clay pots litter the floor, some stacked, others scattered and dirty. The box fan in the window is quiet, listing to one side. The space has its own beauty. It emanates a peace and understanding of the earth's rhythms. It provides a snapshot of the cycles of life - germination, vegetation, fruiting, harvest, and finally, rest. The timing of each phase may vary, but the cycle remains the same.

The cold and harshness of deep winter are still a fresh memory and the greenhouse is still at rest, but the promise of spring and the anticipation of new life is evident everywhere. Soon, while winter is turning its back on us, I will begin my spring ritual of welcoming the sun back to our home. The liter of pots on the floor will be cleaned, remnants of last year’s harvest will be swept away, the fan set straight. The greenhouse will once again transform into a fertile space, rich with possibilities and promise for new growth and a successful harvest.
