short story
Dissipating fog left wet dew that begun to form droplets in the lush grass as earthworms surfaced reacting to chemical stimulus. Tepid soil braced deep impressions horizontal in direction when approaching cumulonimbus clouds became luminous with lightning that revealed a kettle of hawks in glide. Thunder masked the sound of approaching hoof beats as gun shots echoed in the distance. Tatters rubbed boot catching chipped leaden spur as footsteps walked. The equine fell breaking rib puncturing lung in a scream bloody with lacerations as warbonnet feathers fell to the ground. A solider followed approaching the gasping horse asking for slave papers offering the dark skinned man a lift up onto his beast of burden when the sound of a locomotive rang loud as the kettle of hawks flew then landing in the spot, the apparitions effervesced. The spurs pressed deeply into the soil disturbing earthworms while tarnishing white as the man knelt by his exasperated horse. Headlights began to descend on the rural highway a mile away from the wooded area where the kneeling man wept.
