A religious man told me that the road I was on was dangerous, and that theirs was not.

Roads of gold
Onward
They go
Not for me
But for others
I see them walking
Stumbling along
Singing some song
Out of tune
They don’t know
The actual words
Every other verse
Is made up
They swear
This is how it goes
No one close
Dares to question
What they are confessing
Such pompous trash
What they do
And how they do it
Gets under my skin
I stand right here
In these shadows
Detesting who they are
What they will become
I’m unlike them
In every possible way
All the roads
That I traverse
Are not made of
Costly metals
Or precious stones
All the roads
That I navigate
Are mud
Jagged stones
Bits and pieces
Of things not known
Some parts are smooth
But most seem difficult
Damn near impassible
I sing no songs
Hum no tunes
I mumble my way along
Upright and proud
For being who I am
And nothing like them
A man of principle
Standing upright
Roads of gold
Go off to a place
That they alone
Are sure they belong
Is God down that way
Beyond
What they assume
Past all that is known
Out there at the end
Of all that they wish
I’m not sure
But they seem like they are
They walk, stumbling
Singing their own song
Praying to their own God
Saying follow me
But if you please
Stay a ways back
So that I alone
Am sure to get there
Long before you
Long before all else
Roads of gold
The way they see it
Destination Heaven
The way I see it
A direct path
To an external prison
Where they will be kept
Confined by the idea
That there is nothing more
Than the path
That they are presently on
And the end of such a path
I don’t believe as they do
I won’t
I’ll outright refuse
Upon my own
Dangerous thoroughfares
And deciding crossroads
I have come to find a way
Sure at times it is hell
Some days I become lost
But some days I am found
In the end
One thing that I’m certain of
I will get to where it is
I myself truly belong…
