What do you do when the one you love is gone but not forgotten.
A tree stood on the hill where he used to take her. On a old scarred branch hung a swing that was now swaying in the breeze while white dandelion puffs broke away and formed clouds of white that swirled around the tree.
Jacob often took his love, Rebecca, here for a morning breakfast or afternoon tea, but, their favorite time was when they would come here and watch the sun set after a long day of monotonous work in a rather dreary town called Akron.
Jacob used to be a star athlete in high school and he was known as “Dozer” to his friends because he would plow through the defense in all the football games. Rebecca was the tall blond cheerleader that everyone looked up too. Even though she was a cheerleader she was not your typical kind. She wasn't preppy and snobby and found the time to help everyone in the school, even the nerds, emos, and geeks. Heck, her best friend was a gay nerd that loved spiders and had several tarantulas he kept at his home.
The years went by and eventually Jacob and Rebecca got married. Their honeymoon was sweet, they traveled to Hawaii and stayed in a lovely resort overlooking the ocean, but, when they came home the first place they went to was that tree on the hill to watch the sun set as they had many times before. The embraced under the tree and kissed.
One day Jacob came home from work and Rebecca told him that she needed to talk to him. She told him to sit down that what she had to say was important.
“I'm Pregnant” she said to him.
Jacob was speechless at first but finally came to his senses and started jumping up and down screaming “I'm going to be a dad.” They were so happy.
A few months later the baby bump was coming along nicely on Rebecca and Jacob and her took a trip down to a friends house that was quite a ways from their house.
They spent a lovely evening with their friend, but, Jacob had a little to much to drink and there was no way he should or could be driving so Rebecca was going to drive back to their place.
It was a dark cloudy night and the moon was overshadowed by the dark clouds that were in the sky. Rebecca found it hard to concentrate with Jacob babbling on about how he could save the world with “Free rum to everyone that donates a loaf of bread to the Somalians.” He was out of his mind drunk.
While Rebecca was driving Jacob started to watch they road and say more silly things.
Suddenly their was a flash in the trees ahead of them and a deer stepped out in from of the car.
Jacob saw it as well as Rebecca. She was getting ready to put on the breaks when Jacob jerked the wheel to the left and screamed, “Deer.”
The car went off the road and swerved through the trees. Rebecca tried to regain control, but, it was too late. The car smashed into a tree on the driver side.
Jacob woke up in the hospital finally sober. He sat up straight and a nurse ran to his side.
“Sir, you have to lay back down, you suffered a concussion in the crash.”
“What about my wife, is she OK?” He asked with deep concern.
“Sir I don't know how to tell you this but your wife, she's dead. We saw she was pregnant but the baby didn't make it either. I'm so sorry.”
Jacob finally remembered what had happened. The guild welled up inside of him. He knew that this was his fault.
A few months went by and Jacob slowly descended into a world of alcohol and pills. Finally one day he knew that he had to make peace with this guilt and he knew that he had to go to where him and Rebecca always went. The tree on the hill to watch the sun set.
Jacob got a package out of his closet and headed to his car and drove a quarter of a mile down the road to their special place.
He went to the swing and sat down on it. The dandelion puffs flowed around him and he thought of Rebecca.
“I'm so sorry Rebecca. I need your forgiveness. What I wouldn't give to be with you again, so I'm going to make the happen. I love you.”
Jacob opened the package and took out a metal object from the package. He looked at it for a minute, tears welling up in his eyes. He placed it to his head and cocked the hammer. He breathed one final breath and his finger pulled the trigger.
