childhood books make lasting friends
I met her
in the sanctuary
of my bedroom,
the rhythms of her
life vibrating
across time
to inhabit my
world with log
cabins and
maple snow.

She was my friend,
her worries
and insecurities
making mine
forgivable—
we tormented
our sisters
together,
then carried
the guilt.

When we met as adults
(realms of fantasy later)
I rejoiced:
Laura Ingalls Wilder
retained her magic.
