this is really my parent's story
“that house is haunted!” children shrieked
and giggled at the lore
they knocked and then an unseen hand
creaked open the door
before they could say “trick or treat!”
their big eyes widened more—

the entryway was dark and still,
but haunting music played
a chill wind blew a steady stream—
so creepy hangings swayed
and when a spotlight switched to on:
my parents were displayed.

Mama wore her wedding dress
her face was painted white—
and Daddy’s suit dripped spider silk,
it was a ghoulish sight.
a gruesome undead couple waited
on that moonlit night.

while Mama’s still unblinking stare
made children doubt their goals,
with sluggish movements Daddy reached
his hand into a bowl
and placed the candy that he found
into the kids’ control.

but soon All Hallow’s Eve must end,
so Dad unrigged the door,
turned off the music and the fan
which blew across the floor,
while Mama nursed a babe (that’s me!)
and planned for next year’s gore.
