A retelling of an old example of judgement.
“Hey! That’s my bag of darts!” The accusation halted conversations and turned young heads.
“No it’s not! I brought it from home.”
“I lost it at the park last week. You took it!”
The disputed item was a mid-sized camera bag, re-purposed to carry several dozen Nerf darts, good ammo for the kids’ regular battles.
“It’s my bag and my darts!” Toby stood firm, holding the bag close.
“What’s the problem?” interrupted Jolie, the oldest in the group. She wasn’t really their leader. The group tended to be democratic with lots of votes, but on occasion Jolie would voice an opinion that was generally accepted.
Ginny spoke first, “He took my bag of darts and won’t give it back!”
“Nuh uh!” the defendant returned. “It was my brother’s.”
They all looked at Jolie. The darts weren’t terribly expensive and everyone had some, but they were second only to Pokemon cards in value in their circle.
Jolie looked thoughtful, then turned the boy whose yard they occupied. “Can you get a pair of scissors from your house?”
“Sure. What for?”
“We’ll just cut the darts in half and they can each have their share.” Jolie stated as though it were the most natural answer.
“What!” Ginny nearly screamed. “That doesn’t make any sense!” The faces of the rest of the group showed they echoed her sentiment.
“Fine by me.” Toby wrinkled his nose in disgust and held out the bag.
Jolie took the bag then turned and held it out to Ginny. “Here. These are yours.” The young girl smiled then stuck her tongue out at Toby.
“Why’d you do that?” he asked.
Jolie answered, “If they were really yours you wouldn’t want them to be cut up.”
“You’re a pill!” Toby retorted. “I’m going home.”
