Three Minute Read
The Bus

“The wheel of the bus goes round and round…” the kids behind me sang- for the fiftieth time… I made a mental note to never teach that song to my granddaughter, but at least I'd teach her the words right. What kind of bus has one wheel? I want to point out.

What’s happened to me? Well, for one, I'm on the bus. And why am I on the bus? Because once again Harold promised me he would take care of something and once again Harold didn't.

Harold and I have been married for thirty seven years. For thirty six years I have been planning to divorce him. First, before I could get my act together I found out we were expecting Julia. Well, he was so excited, and I couldn’t deprive my child of her father, well not before she was born… Then, before I got crazy again, David arrived.

Harold was such a good father really. Probably because he was a kid himself. But then the kids reached their teens, suddenly Harold’s being another child didn’t help. I had to be the disciplinarian, hand out the punishments when things fell apart. It wasn’t fair! I started making more serious plans.

Then Julia got engaged. How would she feel about marriage if ours fell apart! Plus, her her father had to walk her down the aisle. And before I got organized again, a grandchild!

But when Harold let the car go to pot!! Note to self, it's time! He told me not to worry. I'm not worried, I’m livid! I'm on a bus!

Getting to the stop, there was Harold! Grinning! When I got off, he handed me a set of keys, to a brand new car. “Surprise!”

Foiled again…
