Grief reminds you of the little things you miss
3/23/18
The Empty Seat

I miss the scrape
of my knees against the metal frame
of your wheelchair as I rode along
on our summer journeys.

I miss the shape
of your head blocking the view
of the road and the smile I knew was there
on your beautiful face.

I miss the comments
of the people passing by and the look
of bewilderment they gave as I placed a kiss
on your cheek.

I miss all
of the things I took for granted and tears
of bitter regret land softly
on your empty wheelchair.
