The shy girl in Vilhelm Hammershøi's paintings finds her voice - for Kiya.
Too Shy to Show my Face

“Why did you hide your pretty face?”
the famous artist asked of me.
“To get ahead in modern times
a show of confidence is key.”

“It's really hard for me to say
exactly why I ducked away.
Of course, the games that people play
get meaner every passing day.

“What if you hear my name is Rose
but learn my scent is not so sweet?
Or maybe Helen is my name
and yet my face won't launch no fleet.

“I find there's folks who are obsessed
with what's on public show outside.
Your true self is your inner soul,
your outer body but a ride.”
