Contemplating life
Sentinel

Clouds scud across the crystalline sky
Neon grass cools the back of my neck
The snapdragons bow to the sentinel pines
that surround this reverent space

The glade was numbingly quiet
while echoes from the past droned on in my ears.
Elements of the present dance behind my eyes.
Their silence overwhelmed me.

It is when I am my most serene that
time converges and the past and present collide.
I lie prone in this place, giving homage to what has shaped me
I struggle with unwelcome changes yet to come

Resisting change is uniquely ours
as is regret for choices that are second-guessed
I often wonder would I be here now
had my past desires were different

Silence breaks the revelry as a wayward wind
rustles the sentinels and lifts the hawk
with a squawk of delight toward the sun
I envy this unhurried, unworried passage of time
