I looked over the railings. The water was spraying up over the rocks.

"It's not safe down there."

"Stop being a wimp. The best fish are down there, just off the rocks."

"You can go down there if you want but you're not taking the boy." I grabbed Petie's hand. The four year old squirmed.

"I promised to take the lad fishing and that's what I'm gonna do."

"Then take him somewhere safe to fish. How about the pier? There's railings there."

"And the only thing you're gonna catch is shopping trolleys and rusty bikes."

"I don't care. We've taken responsibility for the kid and I'm not putting him in danger." I watched as Roger clambered over the rocks with his tackle in both hands.

"Watch out!" I screamed as a giant wave crashed over the slippery rocks. Roger disappeared under the torrent of water. As the sea receded I saw Roger in the water, clinging to a rocky outcrop. It took all his strength to haul himself up onto solid ground.

"And if that had been Petie ..."
