What is a Flag?

What is a flag? A symbol of our hope
raised by a cheering crowd of kindred folk
who'd rather act to change the world than mope,
declaring war to cast aside their yoke.

What is a flag? A gaudy spangled cloth
that gave the rebels strength to face a king.
They stood against the royal army's wroth,
a feat like David's duel with a sling.

What is a flag? Some bullet-riddled rag
once carried into battle by a man,
who didn't waste his time on words and brag
but bravely stood his ground when others ran.

Red, white, and blue entreating men to fight;
bright colors calling folks to do what's right.
